PORTUGAL - SPORT ONSIGHT SPORT - SAGRES

POSITION: A whole series of cliffs that give some substance to the extreme south west of Portugal. Some cliffs have been developed for trad climbing, others with newer sport bolts (may be quite spaced), and also as a premier deep water soloing venue.

Trad: The peninsula point at Sagres has been develped as trad climbing. The local fishermen also are pretty keen on the area - fishing from the top of the 50metre high cliff. The oweners of the land here are also a bit sceptical about climbers, so check at the Bar Andromeda in Sagres. Here you will get all the up to date information, plus excellent web weather forcasts that are provided for the strong surfing community.

SPORT CLIMBING: The best area for this is out to Cabo de Sao Vicente, on the Mirror - photo opposite. You need abseil ropes and a steady head. Other cliffs may also have been developed.

DEEP WATER SOLOING: There are no shortage of excellent venues here, over deep sea, but being the Atlantic - the swell tends to be on the large side and boats can get into trouble very easily. Go carefully.
