PORTUGAL - SPORT ONSIGHT SPORT - FENDA POSITION: A hidden series of leaning walls that form a chasm in the hillside. On the slopes near Portinho do Arribida, to the west of Setubal, just south of Lisbon. Three different access points to these cliffs, and you need the guidebook to find any of them. The road above has lots of small paths leading off into the undergrowth, which is full of mini limestone gorges and caverns - a nightmare. The cliffs themselves are full on 30 metre leaning walls. Nothing really much below 7a, except for a couple of fun excursions. There are around 50 routes here which are top quality pump fests - 7a-8a. The walls rise up out of a deep cleft in the earth and give exceptionally good climbing. Unfortunately, the belayer gets stuck in the viewless mire for the entire time, which is dusty, cold and pretty dank. Not the place to come as a belayer. Alternatively, the beach below with the golden sand, restaurants and bars is superb, and ideal for the others in the gang who want a day off by the sea. Great location - but not everything. LIMPO-PO: 7a+, Joao Schiappa PORTUGAL - SPORT ONSIGHT SPORT - OUTAO & OTHERS OUTAU POSITION: A small cliff just past the cement works to the west of Setubal in the Arribada national park, south of Lisbon. A rambling and quite large cliff, with a single route up the middle to right side. Big undeveloped wall high up, and other parts. Not a hard excursion, but with fine views and a great position. There are other cliffs back along the coastline at Pedreiras that we illustrate in the guidebook. These may undergo development, so it is worth searching for more information.
