Bourgogone onsight - Topo Guide HAUTEROCHE This is a big cliff. set deep in woodland. We include a sample of 52 routes here for anyone to get into the place and get started. The rock is limestone and is mainly around 25m high, although it looks and feels like 35m high. It is very coarse and grainy, and in parts looks quite frightening - so be a bit careful if the rock is damp, which makes it a lot weaker. You won't find this cliff in under 5 hours without a guidebook. The climbing is very good, and on rock that faces west and catches a nice warming afternoon sunshine. The base of the cliff is a bit rocky and damp, since the trees encroach and shade it such. There is a very good selection of routes in the 6a/b category, and it is at this level that the cliff is very good indeed - perhaps edging into 6c-7a too. It's often pretty quiet, and especially in midweek. Summary: 250 routes, mainly in the grades 4-7b; with 10 harder routes; up to 35m high. Photo:SHIT AND SHIMAY 6a+; Climber: Carrie Atchison-Jones. |
